Hand Hotel in Fairplay,Co

Last leg for Day One

After a great lunch at Dorothy's I had just 18 miles to go to Fairplay where I plan to spend the night. Amazingly the wind had calmed and the temperature came up a bit. When I got to Dorothy's it was very windy, cold and raining. I had a nice Tamale diner, a soda and candy bar but there was no hot coffee that I really wanted. In Fairplay I stayed in a very nice B&B called the Hand Hotel recommended by my girlfriend Julie.

The Top of Pass Two

I made it to the top of 9500ft Wilkerson Pass. It was a long gradual climb with narrow shoulders and sections of one lane roads due to construction. The weather held out but the wind picked up and made for a tough ride across South Park. Yes South Park as in the TV cartoon. It's about a 20 mile ride across the park, which is wide open with zero cover from the elements. This was one section of the trip I was not looking forward to. And yes the wind blew and at a 45 degree angle so as to push me into traffic and slow me down. A long ride across that high mountain desert, but what keep me going was Dorothy's Tamale Cafe at the other end.

Shelter from a storm

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile

Surrounded by storm clouds

On the way to the top of the first pass Ron decided to turn around and head home before it started to pour rain. I pushed on and managed to thread my way through the storms. But my luck ran of ten miles before the summit of the next pass. I found a dry spot in a school bus stop shelter.

On the way

It's Wednesday morning and my friend Ron and I left the house at 8:08 this morning. Headed up the pass to Woodland Park and a stop for breakfast at the Hungry Bear. Took 2 hours to get here at an easy pace of 11.5 mph

My Route to Glenwood Springs

This is the route I've decided to ride to Glenwood Springs, it's just over 200 miles with over 9k of climbing. I'm riding the new red couch steel road bike geared at 40 x 16 fixed and freewheel. The first leg I will stop in either Fairplay or push on to Breckenridge depending on weather and how I feel.
Below is the first two days of my route:

Today I loaded my messenger bag with what I need for my trip. It is not very heavy and should ride well. I'm going out for a little test ride around town
